Route of Medieval Castles

The Kingdom of Spain has it’s origin in Castille and it was here where the Kings of Castilla y Leon had their court. Although the Spanish Reconquista took place all over the iberian peninsula, he first battles between Christians and Muslims took place in Castille. It is therefore not strange that Castille is the Spanish region with the most fortified towers, fortresses and castles.

Some of these fortresses have a califal origen but where later transformed into christian castles. All of them were relevant at their time, having been either royal residences or built by noble families with the permission of the king.

In this route we will visit some of the most important and best preserved castles of the south of Castille, located around Segovia, Valladolid, Burgos and Avila.

The trip will be packed with interesting visits and content but the distances we will travel will not be too long, mostly all below 120 km a day, all located around Segovia and Valladolid
